Acts 2:14-21

Today’s devotional is written by Pastor Emily Sterling-Strongman.

Today our High School mission team leaves for a mission trip to Puerto Rico. They will be serving with the people of Puerto Rico for the next week. Please keep the health and safety of the team in your prayers. I am excited to hear their stories when they return!

Acts 2:17-18 says, “In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on ALL people. Your sons AND daughters will prophesy. Your YOUNG will see visions. Your ELDERS will dream dreams. Even upon my servants, men AND women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days and they will
prophesy.”

Peter’s words, quoting from the prophet Joel, remind us of the radical inclusivity of the Holy Spirit. God pours out the Holy Spirit upon ALL people – people of all genders, ages, races socioeconomic statuses, etc. ALL people are invited to participate in the work of the Holy Spirit. The work of the Holy Spirit includes prophesying or sharing God’s message with the world. Each
one of us has a story to tell of how God has worked in our lives or how we have seen God at work in the world.

The Holy Spirit empowers us to tell our stories. Perhaps the Holy Spirit also
empowers us to listen to the stories of people who are different from us so that we can learn what new things God is doing. Visioning and dreaming are also works of the Holy Spirit. God beckons us to imagine what God’s
kingdom looks like and God involves us in making that kingdom vision a reality. God encourages us to dream about our church – what positive differences can our church make in the world.

YOU! The Holy Spirit can come upon YOU – with your sexual orientation, gender identity, race, ethnicity, national origin, immigration status, age, faith history, marital status, physical ability, cognitive ability, educational level, and socioeconomic status, etc. – AND empower you to prophesy, see visions, and dream.

What is your vision for the world?

What do you dream for yourself, for First Church, for the world?

What have you heard or learned from someone who is older than you or younger than you or somehow different from you?

Please share your visions, dreams, ideas, thoughts, comments, and questions. We want to hear them!

  1. Creating spaces where God can walk amongst his people – this is my vision.
